Developer Personalities Introduction: The Visual Edition

We recently published a Research Brief - an introduction to Developer Personalities. It's likely developers don't think like you do, so better understanding them helps you offer them better value and marketing that addresses their concerns and needs. But some of us prefer to see things a bit more graphically ... so here's the slide deck summary of this initial introduction to developer personalities (still, go download the brief too). You may notice a few new insights sprinkled here and there, too. Research Brief: Developer Personalities Introduction from Jeff Hadfield

Developer Personalities: Audience Brief

Software developers are a unique, demanding demographic. Developer Media’s latest research analysis helps marketers better understand them in order to better market to and communicate with them. Developers don’t think like the average person. In fact, developers are somewhat of a breed apart. They’re likely to identify themselves as craftsmen and artisans, in an engineering, technical-problem-solving sense. While there are many ways to assess personality types, one of the most widely accepted is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®), a way to illustrate personality differences. The MBTI describes personality types based on four pairs of opposing traits, and then describes [...]

Developers Love Competition

Developers love competition. Why? Based on my experience, they enjoy showing off their skills and they enjoy the intellectual challenge. And, of course, some of them just plain love to compete. But it's not just my opinion. We recently completed a Developer Media study about personality types. I'll share the results with you later, but the short version is that 70% of developers fit into 5 personality types. To further drill down, we found that 52% of developers have "NT" personality traits vs. 14% of the regular US population. What's NT? Well, we used the Myers-Briggs Personality Index (MBTI) (R), [...]

Why PCs aren’t dead, dying or even terminally ill

By many reports, the PC industry is dying. I maintain that it is not; it's just evolving. As a technology marketer, it's important to understand this evolution, and that the future embraces multiple devices, from phone and tablet to PC. Developers now serve multiple devices. (This is the original IBM 5150. In my part-time job in high school I serviced these. Back in my day, young whippersnapper, RAM came in sleeves and you had to push each chip into the socket.) An article in the Sunday New York Times this week reported that tablet sales continue to affect PC [...]

Presentation Highlights: How are Developers Different and How Do I Talk To Them?

Marketing to Developers: How are they different and how do I talk to them? from Jeff Hadfield I've just uploaded to SlideShare the TL;DR ( i.e. "abbreviated") version of the presentation I've shared with hundreds of people about marketing to software developers. Many have asked for a glimpse of this presentation, and here's the answer. Normally we tailor the presentation to your needs: for example, we can drill deeply into developer personality types, how they differ from everyone else, and thereby how they prefer to hear information. We also spend a lot of time talking about what developer-focused tactics and [...]

Don’t Over-Slice the Developer Market

At Microsoft's Build 2013, I had many conversations with folks plugged in to the developer market. There were a handful of themes I heard repeated, and I'll share the first with you today. Microsoft's Dmitry Lyalin, told me, "The role of the developer is expanding. We are expected to be not just be the web guy or desktop guy, you're expected to be the developer. You have productivity being pushed down on you from corporate level and you are expected to have your skill set transpose across a bunch of technologies." As marketers, we have a tendency to want [...]
