The Power of Developers: Why Developers Reject Tool Recommendations

We recently posed the question to the CodeProject.com audience: “How often do you shoot down product tool choices your manager / team lead presents to your team?". From this, we learned that 34.5% of the developers who responded very often, often, or occasionally reject the choices the purchaser has already made. In addition, approximately 30% never have to reject a product from on high because they choose their own tools! However, this first survey did not dig into the reasons why developers had rejected or disliked tool selections made by their manager, team lead, or other leaders in their organization. [...]

Calling All DevOps Engineers

Calling Them What? And that is the question. If you are marketing to developers, you already know that there is no generic “developer.” Undoubtedly, your tool or service is meant to be wielded by a very specific developer persona. But thanks to DevOps, that persona may be employing multiple tools. So when your persona also identifies as DevOps, what does that mean? Why should you care? To understand this, Developer Media posed a very simple question on CodeProject.com: “Are you a DevOps engineer?” Yes, But... At least one developer responded, “Yes, but I don’t want to be one.” Harrr. [...]

Biggest Challenges Developers Face While Working From Home

Lions and Tigers and Children, Oh My! The global response to ending the COVID-19 pandemic has created a widening swathe of communities requiring some kind of shelter-in-place (SiP). Many companies are mandating working from home, even if their communities have not yet implemented SiP, shutdowns, or lockdowns. Developers are still working—and for some, working from home is their status quo. But now, even those developers who usually work from home are finding that they have new “coworkers” with schools and other workplaces shut down. CodeProject asked its developer community, “What are your biggest challenges with working from home?” Survey [...]

Why Market to Developers? Developers Have Influence

Why Market to Developers? Maybe your product’s customer is actually a CIO. Maybe the purchasing team sits on the business side of the house. So, why should you pay attention to developers? It turns out that they are often part of the decision making unit.  Our survey of a developer community results showed that 60% of developers have the ability to approve or reject a tool purchase.  We asked  a [...]

A Deep Dive Into Machine Learning Developers

To Gather Data Is Human We like to think we are data-driven. From large-scale government or business operations to individuals managing their budget, people justify decisions based on data. Our devices gather data to enable entities to aggregate vast amounts of data which are processed, analyzed, and correlated in order to draw conclusions. Data science (DS), machine learning (ML), and artificial intelligence (AI) all process large amounts of data to make decisions. SlashData has recently published its annual State of the Developer Nation Survey, which includes a section devoted to developers of machine learning applications and the type of data [...]

Developer Influence 2021

The capacity to influence is a wonderful thing. It implies that people have trust in your judgement and confidence in your ability to make the right decisions, and that you have knowledge and experience that can be used to guide others’ decision-making. In the developer community, influence can affect decisions around tools, languages, platforms, and procedures.
